I sincerely hope that love doesn’t require understanding because I don’t even understand myself most of the time.
When the Pharisees tried to test Jesus about the Law, they asked him which commandment was the greatest. It was an easy question. Love God and, Jesus added, another like commandment, love others as you love yourself.
Most laws seem to be created to fix an immediate problem. Require papers, build fences, require or deny rights or privileges, send “them” away, etc. Just do this and the problem will go away.
But love is not so easily done. It is not as simple as a law to understand what is required (which is not to say that many laws created by lawmakers these days are easy to understand) and yet it is the ultimate law.
Only when we put all that we are into loving can we get a glimpse of what it is all about. That seems to reverse other laws. With other laws we fear the price we pay if we don’t keep them. With love we often fear the price we have to pay to do it.
Understand? No? Do it anyway. Love.
