Performances at Pioneer presents OMARI TAU

Sacramento native, Omari Tau is a singer at home in a range of vocal styles from classical and musical theatre, to jazz and pop.   He has proven a versatile performing artist, educator, and director.  He’s currently Professor of Vocal Music at Cosumnes River College, Founding Artistic Director of Rogue Music Project (RMP), and member of MôD Artists, winner of the 2017-2018 Sacramento Region Community Foundation Grant for their work chronicling the history of Sacramento’s Historic Oak Park neighborhood.  His degrees are from Michigan State University and the Moores School of Music-University of Houston in Music Education and Vocal Music Performance.  

Mr. Tau has served as Director of Opera Theatre for Sacramento State, directed the Houston Grand Opera’s Education and Outreach Department touring opera program, Opera To Go! and worked with numerous local ensembles including Sacramento Philharmonic and Opera, Broadway at Music Circus, B Street Theatre, Music In The Mountains, among many others.

As a performing artist, Mr. Tau toured internationally with Disney’s The Lion King for nearly nine years, performing the role of Banzai with both the Cheetah and Gazelle companies.  Other credits include roles at the Tony Award-winning Alley Theatre, Broadway Sacramento and musicals such as Evita with original choreographer Larry Fuller at Theater Under The Stars, Once on this Island at TheatreWorks Palo Alto with Gerry McIntyre.  Tau appears on Albany Records in Roger Nelson’s operatic adaptation of A Room with a View and Disney’s A Lion King Christmas recordings.

As a composer, Tau’s operas A Night At the Algonquin, Lucky Hans and The Pre-Show Opera Lecture were all commissioned and premiered by Lone Star Lyric where they enjoyed successful runs. He has also composed for Houston Grand Opera’s Education and Outreach programming as well as his own initiative entitled Lions in the Library which features chamber music arrangements to accompany the readings of children’s books.
